  • Is pregnancy a "medical condition requiring accommodations" if I’m applying to be a teacher?

Posted by admin on May 30th, 2011 and filed under accommodations | 2 Comments »

I’m 5 weeks pregnant so not showing, and I don’t want to tell people who I am applying for jobs with that I am pregnant. I’m applying to be a teacher, so I can do all the duties without accommodations, except I will need maternity leave (which is why I’m scared if I tell them, then they won’t hire me….). On all of the aplications, they ask if I have a medical condition requiring accommodations. Is pregnancy a medical condition like this for being a teacher? Thanks

Pregnancy is considered to be a medical condition. You’re going to have to go on maternity leave, so that’s a required accommodation.
Just be honest. If you lie about it they’re going to figure it out in a few months anyway, and then they’re going to view you as a liar.

Are there any decent cheap motels in the Bronx?

Posted by admin on May 28th, 2011 and filed under motels | 8 Comments »

A couple of friends are looking for a place to stay for a few days while apartment hunting. Could you tell me some cheap motels in the Bronx area that are decent, or in Queens? Thanks so much!
None of us know anything about NYC, but thanks anyway.

If you have a choice, stay in Queens. In NYC, you’ll find it’s typically more a matter of ‘cheap’ OR ‘decent’ as opposed to cheap AND decent and the Bronx is really not a place for first time visitors who know nothing about NYC. Try looking here: http://www.nycvacationstays.com/hotels.htm

What facilities use full body turnstiles ?

I want to incorporate one of these gnarly things in a short story of mine. Thing is, I don’t quite know what facilities use them. I was HOPING that they’d be used in wards with high-risk patients and/or correctional facilities. Anyone know where they’d be used?

You can often find them used on subways as either exits or card controlled entrances.

How does the education system in England work? Like what is college and university?

Posted by admin on May 16th, 2011 and filed under england | 1 Comment »

My friends and I are Australian and want to finish school here, then take higher education to England. What is the difference between college and university in England and how does it work??? Any answer would be most appreciated! :)

College is where you go after secondary school. There are a number of types, including 6th Form (for general academic subjects – like an extension of secondary school). There are also Tech Colleges and Art colleges where you can do more specializes courses like BTEC (not degrees). The main qualification gained at colleges are A Levels.

After 2/3 (normally 2) years of college you can go to University. This is normally for 3 years, but there are exceptions. Some courses have a year in industry, or a year studying abroad, leading to a 4 year course. Other are longer versions of courses, e.g. 4 year MMath instead of regular maths which takes 3 years. Medecine takes longer, too.

    That’s basically it.

How does one become a citizen of England?

Posted by admin on May 11th, 2011 and filed under england | 2 Comments »

I am hoping to move to England. My career path would be that of a history teacher and it seems that England has a better job market than here(America). How would I go about becoming an English citizen? I am asking on the UK answers because I figured more English people would see it. Thanks for the help guys.

There is no such thing as an "English citizen"! The word is British citizen. The UK is composed of 4 parts Scotland,Wales,Northern Ireland and England itself. One must come and live in one of those and in 5 years apply for citizenship if you wish. Dont give up your US citizenship!!

How old do you have to be to stay in a hostel in europe?

I am 17 years old and european, can I stay in a hostel in europe?

If they ask you for a credit card you could possibly get a card with stored value on it. (a drug store like CVS or walgreens may carry this) that you probably don’t have to be 18 for.

I find this site useful for finding hostels:

What is the difference amond strategies, modifications, and accomodations for disabled students?

Posted by admin on May 5th, 2011 and filed under accomodations | 3 Comments »

Hi, I am having problems differentiating these three terms. I have to come up with 10 different teaching strategies for teaching students with visual impairments. How do I know if it is an actual strategy, modification, or accommodation. Please tell me the difference, definition, give me examples of each. I am so confused about the three. Any help will be awesome.
wow thanks ladies, your answers really helped. I am still confused about strategies and accommodations. It seems like accomodations can also be strategies for the students for visual impaiments?

A strategy is a way to teach a skill, the same skill that other kids are learning. Using music to remember a list, for example.
A modification is when you actually change what a child will learn. Usually this is for kids who cannot learn the task due to mental or physical limitations so they do something different. Modified PE is an easy example.
An accommodation is when you make allowances for a child to do the task in a different way. For instance, having a visually impaired child use enlarged print on worksheets, or reading the questions to a reading disabled child on a science test.
