What strategies can a teacher implement to meet an ESL student’s need?
First, you should establish the student’s needs. There are different ways of doing this, depending on their level. Usually a quick feedback survey sheet is sufficient enough (for example, what would you like to practise? what do you have trouble with? do you like working in pairs or by yourself?).
Secondly, each student learns differently and there are tests out there as well. There are various resources online that deal with ‘learner training’. Quote: "It has been said that teaching is nothing more than showing someone that something is possible, and learning is merely discovering that something is possible." Once those basics are covered, you can devise strategies that will help your students needs such as those mentioned by previous posters.
And when all else fails, google : )
Hope that helps!

There are some strategies that an ESL teacher can use to make sure that the ESL student succeeds.
1) Give extra time if necessary on exams or other assignments
2) Give a test that requires the same knowledge, but simpler language
3) Provide a tutor if necessary for the ESL student to learn better
4) Provide time after school for the ESL student to come in for questions and help.
