  • What is the average success rate of booking an acting job through talent agencies?

Posted by admin on November 24th, 2009 and filed under booking | 4 Comments »

I’m thinking of hiring an agent and joining a talent agency, but first I want to know what the chanced of booking something, like a commercial, is.

you will be able to get on more interviews with an agent than without
one. agents only find you interviews, whether you book anything
depends on your talent and skill and ability. agents only put
you in the right place to get a job, the rest is up to you. without
an agent about the only things you will be going on are local theater,
student films and the rare open call.

It all really just depends on the demands of the market at the time…It’s very unpredictable really. Usually though, the toughest age for girls to book a gig is ages 12-17…Don’t quite know why, just not a very big demand for those ages right now. But it could all change next month. I’ve been with my talent agency for a little over a year now. My agent submitted my resume and headshot to several casting directors, but they all wanted someone with a different ethnicity than mine. Finally, I was sent on my very FIRST audition ever, for a commercial back in May. And I booked it!!! I’m now filming my second commercial this weekend.
As you can see, its all very unpredictable…..they always say, you will audition at least 100 times before you ever book anything. That wasn’t true in my case, but always a good thing to keep in mind that its gonna take lots and lots of tries to get anything, usually.

Very very slim, but that has nothing to do with whether you go through an agency. They just help you get auditions. It’s up to you to book the job. Most commercials won’t even see people without representation, so they get you in the door.

Very slim, the fact is there are thousands and thousands of would be actors for every gig or role. Simply too many for too little work. An actor auditions dozens and dozens of times for each role earned. Sometimes a hundred auditions can go by without a booking. It’s simply a very competitive industry. Commercials, Voice Overs, Films, TV, it’s all very competitive. The majority of professional actors in the U.S. belong to unions like AFTRA and SAG. SAG for instance, has 120,000 members, and of that number less than 2% makes over $5,000 per calender year as a performer. That’s how bleak a career in entertainment can be so make sure you love it. Don’t come in thinking it’s an easy way to make money. It is not. You will spend thousands more investing in yourself as a business and performer before you ever see a dime in return.
