one of the arguments for bringing in so many foreign players into our teams is that they would make british football more fluid and skilfull…well, judging by recent performances at international level, it doesn’t seem to be the case…we were better off in the eighties!!!…

This game showed Argentina’s weakness, despite all their pretty footwork if you got down the wing & sent over a good cross they were in disarray

Thus Liverpool’s David Johnson grabbed two goals as “Fillol Flapped”

Linekar’s goal in 1986 came from a John Barnes cross as did almost the equaliser – had we used Wingers & ATTACKED them instead of “showing utmost respect” – they could have been beaten

as for the Druggie’s wonder goal then…well he was only going past Terry Fenwick !!

      I’m sure Argentina …
I’m sure Argentina would have been labelled sore losers if they had lost in that match in May 1953 and stated the fact that their best available XI on the day did not include the likes of Alfredo DiStefano, Jose Manuel Moreno or Adolfo Pedernera, all of which were legends in Argentina at the time. I recall a match in July 1988 in which Argentina lost 4-1 against Australia. That day they fielded practically a reserve side & yet Argentina has never denied this defeat nor refused to acknowledge it.

    19. semela3 Says:

      There was a match …
There was a match in May 1953 in Buenos Aires in which Argentina won 3-1, however the English don’t ever include this match in their statistics, as they apparently fielded an FA XI instead of their best XI. The problem here is that they neglected to inform the Argentinian FA they were doing so and so Argentina fielded their best available XI at the time and as far as they were concerned they beat a team that represented the English national side on the day.

    20. semela3 Says:

      I don’t believe 15 …
I don’t believe 15 matches in nearly 110 years of football can accurately assess which of the two is better than the other. Even if Argentina had won 6 & England only 3, I would still not consider it to be a true assessment. But I do concede that even with only 15 matches played, England does have the scales tilted in their favour. Most of these matches were played in England or Europe. There were 3 played in Brazil, Chile & Mexico, but Argentina could never be local in any of these 3 countries.

I went to this game (was 11 at the time) and watching this clip 2 things came to mind. First, that Maradona chappie was not a bad player, and, second, how “scouse looking” was David Johnson. If he’d had a perm he would have been in Brookside.
