Yep, Keegan had just finished his time with Hamburg and was on his way home to play with Southampton. Liverpool did have 5 players in the starting line up that night, tho’.
I went to this game (was 11 at the time) and watching this clip 2 things came to mind. First, that Maradona chappie was not a bad player, and, second, how “scouse looking” was David Johnson. If he’d had a perm he would have been in Brookside.

I don’t believe 15 matches in nearly 110 years of football can accurately assess which of the two is better than the other. Even if Argentina had won 6 & England only 3, I would still not consider it to be a true assessment. But I do concede that even with only 15 matches played, England does have the scales tilted in their favour. Most of these matches were played in England or Europe. There were 3 played in Brazil, Chile & Mexico, but Argentina could never be local in any of these 3 countries.

There was a match …
There was a match in May 1953 in Buenos Aires in which Argentina won 3-1, however the English don’t ever include this match in their statistics, as they apparently fielded an FA XI instead of their best XI. The problem here is that they neglected to inform the Argentinian FA they were doing so and so Argentina fielded their best available XI at the time and as far as they were concerned they beat a team that represented the English national side on the day.

I’m sure Argentina would have been labelled sore losers if they had lost in that match in May 1953 and stated the fact that their best available XI on the day did not include the likes of Alfredo DiStefano, Jose Manuel Moreno or Adolfo Pedernera, all of which were legends in Argentina at the time. I recall a match in July 1988 in which Argentina lost 4-1 against Australia. That day they fielded practically a reserve side & yet Argentina has never denied this defeat nor refused to acknowledge it.

Great video thanks for posting. BTW does anyone have the hilite of Maradona’s first international goal vs Scotland in 1979? apparently they showed this rare goal on British Tv before the last Scotland Argentina friendly last year. Anyone point me to it?
