HI membership is not essential, but may or may not save you money e.g. when I stayed at the HI Chicago non members payed an extra $3 a night. I generally find HI Hostels impersonal and not the cheapest even with the "discount". However HI badged hostels have to meet certain minimum standards, so you can be reasonably confident they won’t be flea pits.

I traveled across the US, in some places HI Hostels were the best or only choice but in others e.g. Glenwood Springs and Flagstaff there were good hostels but no HI. So I suggest you choose your hostels on the basis of reviews and price, then if any of these are HI check if membership will save you money

If you are from the US and over 18 it will cost you a minimum of $18 for a years membership via
http://hiusa.org/ . If you live elsewhere you join your own countries HI affiliated hostel association (find it here http://www.hihostels.com/web/membership.en.htm ) and your HI badged membership card will entitle you to the same rate at US HI hostels.

I’m looking for a hostel that is close to the city centre and has somewhat of a party vibe. The flying pig and bulldog hostel are ready sold out for those dates so those are out of the question. Any suggestions?

How can i have my own electricity metre in my room in a hostel-like living environment?http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/hostel/how-can-i-have-my-own-electricity-metre-in-my-room-in-a-hostel-like-living-environment http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/hostel/how-can-i-have-my-own-electricity-metre-in-my-room-in-a-hostel-like-living-environment#comments Sun, 26 Feb 2012 14:04:23 +0000 admin http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/hostel/how-can-i-have-my-own-electricity-metre-in-my-room-in-a-hostel-like-living-environment I am not a student. But i am living in a hostel-like building where we have a common power metre. When the power bill comes, everybody shares the bill amount. Since i am using the power most, i think it’s unfair to those whose usage is minimum. Is there any device that i can install in my own room?

That takes a professional electrician and probably would be a major revision. Why not just volunteer to pay extra? The others will consider that fair enough, and it’s a lot cheaper than rewiring the building.

Is offering child care facilities at university will be a viable solution to the drop out of female students?http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/is-offering-child-care-facilities-at-university-will-be-a-viable-solution-to-the-drop-out-of-female-students http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/is-offering-child-care-facilities-at-university-will-be-a-viable-solution-to-the-drop-out-of-female-students#comments Mon, 13 Feb 2012 11:48:58 +0000 admin http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/is-offering-child-care-facilities-at-university-will-be-a-viable-solution-to-the-drop-out-of-female-students Is offering child care facilities at university will be the viable solution to the drop out of female students before graduating?

My uni did have on-site childcare but it was no use to me at all as my child was in school and I had to have something that tied in with the school. I’m not convinced that it would help students who accidentally fall pregnant either. Most will be too busy with the demands of making it to the end of the year (if that is even possible), recovering from childbirth and then getting used to the new baby – and feeding it. By the time the mother has got to grips with it all, the chances are that the new year will have started and the mother will have missed it. This is why we have maternity leave from work, only it is a system that doesn’t translate well to the more rigid academic timetable.

The on-site childcare is really useful for staff members and for students who start after having their child.

How would you feel about a campaign for foot washing facilities for a workplace ‘quiet room’?http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/how-would-you-feel-about-a-campaign-for-foot-washing-facilities-for-a-workplace-quiet-room http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/how-would-you-feel-about-a-campaign-for-foot-washing-facilities-for-a-workplace-quiet-room#comments Wed, 08 Feb 2012 00:25:45 +0000 admin http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/how-would-you-feel-about-a-campaign-for-foot-washing-facilities-for-a-workplace-quiet-room It’s supposed to be for anyone to use, but this will allow ‘certain users’ to use it for prayer facilities. Would you be comfortable using it for a bit of quiet time while ‘certain users’ were using it for prayer?

Your thoughts?

In the UK, anyone is free to follow their own faith although this is a nominally Christian country. This does not mean that other faiths should be denied their right to rites but it does mean that employers are under no obligation to provide appropriate facilities. A sincere holder of a faith will take advice on how to deal with the situation.

What facilities make up a large steel mill?http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/what-facilities-make-up-a-large-steel-mill http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/what-facilities-make-up-a-large-steel-mill#comments Fri, 03 Feb 2012 05:18:00 +0000 admin http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/facilities/what-facilities-make-up-a-large-steel-mill I’m a N scale freelance modeler who is in need of help in knowing how many facilities are there in a large steel mill you see on many railroad runs.
Looking for a big Pittsburgh type steel mill. The common facilities :furnace, rolling mill, ect.
What buildings will i need other than a blast furnace?

Each Steel Mill is different. There could be 6 and there could be 3 and there could be 1. Best bet would look on Google Earth around Gary, IN and Pittsburgh, PA where you could see an overview of many steel mills.

How long can a horse stay in a sweat lodge safely?http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/lodge/how-long-can-a-horse-stay-in-a-sweat-lodge-safely http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/lodge/how-long-can-a-horse-stay-in-a-sweat-lodge-safely#comments Sun, 29 Jan 2012 04:24:59 +0000 admin http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/lodge/how-long-can-a-horse-stay-in-a-sweat-lodge-safely You’ll all be pleased to hear that I have overcome the technical difficulties of constructing a horse and human sized sweat lodge. Now my horse (Marley) and I are planning on going on a vision quest. My last vision quest lasted all night (about 9 hours), would it be safe for Marley to be in a sweat lodge for at least that long… possibly longer?

I think you should have no problem with that, Just warning horses have some wacked out vision quests some times… he may get frightend and want to sleep in you’r bed with you the next night because horses are big wimps… but who doesent like it when their horse sleeps with them? as long as they dont fart to much… hopefully he has been sticking to arbys?

I was hoping someone would have some insight as to which hotel or hostel my friends and I should stay at. We were hoping to be close to the downtown area. And also if anyone knows of any really cheap airline services, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Kind of funny hearing it described as ‘downtown’.

Normally they describe it as the ‘city centre’.

What does the house represent in the jungle?http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/house/what-does-the-house-represent-in-the-jungle http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/house/what-does-the-house-represent-in-the-jungle#comments Thu, 12 Jan 2012 06:12:25 +0000 admin http://www.villa-rosa-di-sicilia.com/house/what-does-the-house-represent-in-the-jungle In the novel, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, what does the house represent.
Jurgis and Ona want to by a lovely house they see in an advertisement, but when they see the house it is run down and old.
What do you think this represents?
Corruption?

I’m reading the book right now too and I think that the house represents the mirage that the government presents society with. They promise a decent house with lovely trimmings and more, but the reality is the exact opposite. I think the house represents the struggle that society (Ona and Jurgis) is faced with and the lies that are told more often than the truth. This is how they tricked immigrants and took their money.
