  • What steps are needed to setup wireless network in a school library and hostel?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under hostel | 3 Comments »

My school has an intranet connected to Internet with wired connection. But another 2 buildings which are a libary and a hostel has no Internet connection. So I decide to setup a wireless network for those 2 buildings but I don’t know what are the steps, can anyone help me with this? Thanks a lot.

First of all you’ll have to make sure the range of the wireless network that you’re going to setup. The normal wireless router can do around 100~200ft(technical specification) but really depend on the environment where you want to setup the network. I believe the 200ft is the range of open space with no walls or any other similar material between PC and router. As you’ve described environment which is 2 buildings around the Internet Service Source, I would not recommend you to get any of those router such is for home use, it will not be able to handle the situation. Go to newegg.com(Wireless router products page:

    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=145&name=Wireless-Routers)

to check out the best range and coverage router.

Or you can setup like a router after a router but you’ve to choose the router carefully and well config them.

If you need more help, please feel free to contact me anytime.
    Good luck.

Well, to get the wireless network, you’ll still need the internet to get to those two buildings. Usually that means running an ethernet cable to the two buildings from a building that already has the internet.

What is the distance between the Internet Point of Access (POS) and the other two buildings?

If the distance is 100 yards or less, I would consider having a cat5 or cat5e wire installed (Inside sealed metal conduit).
Then just place a network "HUB" on the far end of each cable
at each of the two buildings.

Some wireless network frequencies are successable to interference from microwave ovens, cordless telephones, and blueooth devices among other things.

The most current and most common wireless technology uses 802.11g signalling (Sometimes called WiFi).
But the distance is somewhat limited. The most you could hope for under optimal conditions is about 500 yards. And the speed is, at best, only acceptable for occasional use at home, at an airport that offers WiFi, or at a hotel that offers WiFi.

I know that I didn’t exactly answer your question. But I hope I have at least given you some food-for-thought so that you can come back to yahoo answers and ask more questions.

      Good Luck!
