This is kind of hard to answer without seeing the home itself. However, I believe you should go through with the construction of the great room if you have the resources. I doubt it would damage the value of the home as long as you kept the same number of bedrooms. It might actually increase in value with the remodel since it will be updated as long as you can get a good deal on the project itself. Also, if you are doing this type of remodeling it sounds like you are going to stay in the house awhile, so you might as well make it the way you want it. As far as the hallway at the entrance, it might seem a bit strange but it would fit in on an older house fine compared to changing up a newer build with same floor plans throughout a neighborhood. Good Luck!
References :
It all depends on how you want to live. Walking down a long hallway shouldn't make a difference in the value as long as the destination is spectacular. Is there a way to have a window placed at the end of the long hallway in the new room? If so, it should look out onto really pretty landscaping.
