our family is planning to visit DC this weekend. can anyone suggest me some good motels or hotels which are economical to stay. even if they are away from DC upto 15 miles.
In Virginia, right off the Beltway. Look on the map, there’s a road near Alexandria calle "Van Dorn Street". There’s hotel near there, like a Comfort Inn I think. It’s relatively close to the Beltway AND the Van Dorn Street Metro stop. I stayed there once and it was fairly reasonably priced.

I hit bad weather coming through Washington DC last year and ended up at the Americana Hotel over night. It’s located at 1400 Jefferson Davis Highway, Crystal City, DC. It is right in the middle of "everything" you want to see in DC. It’s just a block from the Pentagon and 1.5 miles from the Lincoln Memorial.
The hotel prices are very low — around $100 — and all the other "big name" hotels around it are twice or three times as much, e.g. Embassy Suites at $215, Marriott Crystal Gateway, $257.
They also have a free shuttle service to help get you around.
I took their business card and promised myself that next time I went to DC as a tourist, I would stay at the Americana. You may want to check it out at http://www.tripadvisor.com and I have included the link to this hotel, below. I like Trip Advisor because it includes many recommendations from real travelers.
Good luck! Enjoy your trip!

Definitely what Janet said. The Americana Hotel in Crystal City is your best bet. It’s the perfect mix of cheap, high quality, and ideal location. And since it’s technically in Virgina, you won’t be paying DC prices. Crystal City is also a pretty cool neighborhood.

I use the Crystal City Marriott, located obviously, in Crystal City as well. The location above the Mall and Metro Rail station make it an ideal location at affordable rates. That’s especially true on weekends where rooms can be had for less than $100. From there using Metro Rail, you can be in DC itself within 20 minutes or less.

This is probably coming too late if your trip is THIS weekend, but check out the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda. Rates are from $76/night and the location cannot be beat. It is right above the Bethesda Metro Station, on the Red Line, with connections to everything you could possibly want downtown. The restaurants in the hotel are great, but Morton’s Steakhouse is also just downstairs from the hotel.
Parking is reasonable, too, and there’s a shuttle that runs from the train station and all major airports.
If you miss it this time, definitely plan to stay there on your next visit. We have stayed there several times for class and fraternity reunions and have always been extremely pleased.
