Hey, I am looking for an independant motel in the LA or Anaheim area but everytime I search online I find links to all the big chains. I want something cheaper. There have to be independantly owned properties out there right?
I’ve never heard of an independently owned Hotel, unless it’s something huge, like the Chateau Monmont, or something.
There are plenty of mom and pop Motel, but they will be exactly like you imagine them to be–no tell motels in not such nice parts of town. Although you may have better luck in Anaheim near Disneyland.
You probably will not be able to do much better than the motel chains, like Motel 6. Check with them directly to see if they have any discounts, like AAA, corporate, etc. Remember, you’re not going to be in the room except to sleep. A motel is more than enough for your purposes.
Also consider getting a room with kitchenette. If you can make most of your meals "at home" you can save a bundle on food.
The only thing a little cheaper would be a hotel or the Y. But the few dollars saved may not make up for the inconvenience.

Like Chiero said, everything’s a chain. They may be independently operated by a mom-and-pop operation, but they are pretty low on value.
In Hollywood, I recommend the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel and the Farmer’s Daughter Hotel.
In Anaheim, I recommend the HoJo Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. If you want to splurge and make this a most memorable trip, stay at Disney’s Grand Californian. You get the full Disney experience. Hotels to stay away from include the America’s Best Value Inn, and the Parkside Inn.
In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced.
